Doodles we want to include on our poster.

Doodles we may include in our poster.
These are the doodles I had drawn for our film poster. Some of them we haven't used within our final piece. I had chosen pictures that girls would draw within there books at school, for example ear phones, bird, love hearts, clothes etc. I has also drawn bubbles with the actresses names within them with an arrow so some of our titles can be doodles as well. I drew half of the doodles to suit on character and visa versa, for example the angel wings and halo represent the 'geek' and the skull and the can of drink for the 'bad girl.'

Final doodles
These are our final doodles, we have chosen to fill the bubbles with colours that connect with the characters the actresses are playing. The doodles we have chosen to incorporate within our trailer is the skull, the angel wings, the can of drink. During Photoshop the drawn halo was to hard to cut out so we decided to take a halo and devil horns from Google and use them.

Title of our film poster

This is the title of our film poster! Our group has a discussion on how we would design and make our title of the film to go on the film poster. We decided we need to stick to the conventions of a fantasy/comedy film poster, and create a load, bubbly and exaggerated movie title. Asking our target audience about this title all said the colour and font created a positive cheerful  feeling and they loves how bold it was. I believe this title connotes our film genre and narrative well as its quirky, fun and cartoon like, and I believe this font will stand out on the poster. The text also comes across as 'school like' this adds to the viewers knowledge of our chosen location. To create this title my group and I went onto a film title website were we could generate our own by using there fonts, this was easy to do and very beneficial as it looks professional and it saves us time trying to pick a font from word.
Photoshop.
We saved the photo as a JPEG file, in which we could edit the title. We used the fill with colour tool to create the mustard colour.

photo's for our final idea.

 Runner up.
This was one of our first consideration photos. Our group set off around the school looking for unique places for our photo shoot this was the first place we found. I liked levels of the two characters how as the character of Jess is higher shows she is the more dominant one, she also looks like she has more attitude by the way she is sitting, where she is sitting and her clothing we choose for this shoot. The only problems I could see by this picture was the strong sunlight in both of the characters faces, and the minimal negative space, so we wouldn't be able to add more doodles, billing board or even the title.
Winner.

Our initial idea of our Film poster.

1st idea draft of layout.
This is our first idea layout. We have been inspired by the film poster 'silver linings playbook' as we loves the idea of a split screen as it represents our chosen characters perfectly. Our first title of the film was 'stand up' because we wanted the 'Geek' to stand up for herself, but we thought this would be to hard to show within the trailer and didn't really make sense within our storyline of the two characters swapping bodies. This would be hard to show as it would be unprofessional to have to much talking and storyline within the trailer. We had chosen to incorporate a brick wall within our poster as it makes it have a 'indie' feel and shows how our characters are teenagers this is effective as we wanted our target audience to relate to our poster, as they can relate to school. We had a thought process of putting graffiti of boys and naughty things on the wall of the 'bad girl' and maths questions on the 'geeks side of the wall this would show the audience the characters and would link to the location of our film as well. The element I didn't like about this layout was the colour of of the title as it is harmonious to the brick so does not stand out as much as it should.

1st idea second layout.
Our second layout has pictures of the two characters within it, I believe this doesn't work as the do not look in proportion with each other, and you can tell the photo has been photo shopped . I also believe that they are bad quality photos due to the lighting of the room we took them in and the poor quality of camera this makes the poster look unprofessional at all. We have changed the name, due to our audience feedback, more girls between the ages of 12-25 believed that mix up explained the storyline better due to the 'mix up' of characters and was quirky and different. We chose this title while looking at movies that had a similar storyline to ours. We came across the film 'the change up' and I though of this title straight away. In this new layout we have incorporated a piece of lined paper to connote to the audience they are at school and we discussed how, instead of putting graffiti on the walls we would draw doodles scan them in the computer and photo shop them within the middle, again like the poster of the film 'silver linings playbook.' We decided not to go through with this design, as the pictures look unprofessional and through audience feedback we gained a insight that the poster was 'boring' and didn't represent the film or characters well.

Photoshop experiment.
This is one of our Photoshop experiments, due to our fails within our layouts. I believe this hasn't worked at all, while cutting the background off of the characters and the arrow we have either missed bits out or cut to much off, this makes the photos look unprofessional and unrealistic. I also believe that taking a photo on sight for our poster will look more dramatic and using natural lighting will make our poster look more professional by adding colour and shadow. Our group then decided we would only use photo shop for the doodles we will create and the title, other than that we will use a real image taken next to a brick wall.

Posters that have inspired us.

It's a boy girl thing.

This Film poster has inspired our final idea, one of the reasons we looked at this poster as the movie has a similar storyline to our own, 'two people swapping bodies.' We really liked the idea of the two high school students sitting on a bench showing there two personality's, as it's simple but extremely effective. The title is interesting as it includes different fonts, sizes and colours. I loves the idea of the word boy filled in with pink and girl filled in with blue as it implies the storyline really well, and this shows to there target audience. The words Boy and girl are bigger than 'It's a' and 'thing' as them words aren't as important as the girl and boy swap. The font on 'Boy girl' is much bolder due to them being the most significant words of the title. Above the title there is a review ' It's body-swapping brilliant' this promotes the poster to the viewer. The words 'body-swapping' are in blue to make it stand out, this again shows the movie synopsis to the audience. The colours within this movie poster are light and cheerful, this enhances the movie genre of fantasy/comedy, and the white background makes everything stand out and really engage the viewer. the billing board is very small so you can barely see it, as it's not the most important thing within the poster, this follows typical film poster conventions. This is not a teaser poster as it tells the viewer when the film is in cinemas, again the colour changes in 'December 26' as that is another important fact to promote the movie. Above the title there are the actors names 'Kevin Zengers' and 'Samaire Armstrong'  these are well known actors within American telling me that the movie is American, having these actors within the poster and in the film will promote this film to American audiences. The picture is defiantly why I have picked this poster to inspire our final idea, I love the way how the clothes symbolise a typical girl, and a typical 'Jock' but the actors body postures contrast this dramatically. The picture also gives away the movie genre as it's funny and exaggerated. Only films such as rom coms, comedies and fantasy can use exaggerated poses and get away with it.

Angus thongs and perfect snogging

The most prominent thing within this film trailer is the picture of the protagonist 'Georgia' centred within the poster, as she is in the middle the viewer automatically knows that this film is centred on her character. In her pose she is looking up towards doodles, and pictures of other characters this reminds me that she is looking up towards her life and the things that effect it during the film. The doodles are really effective and shows the movie genre of 'chick flick' brilliantly. there is also a picture of Georgia's crush within the doodles, this again shows the movie genre. The title is quiet similar to ' it's a boy girl thing' as its in different sizes, the bolder words are what the promoter wants the audience see, there is also a kiss mark doodle in pink to contrast the title and to enhance the genre. Again the billing board is extremely small and a neutral colour, as the viewer needs to be attracted by other aspects within the poster. This poster inspired our group as we loved the doodles within it, and we thought we could incorporate some within our poster as we wanted a 'indie' feel towards our film. It would also show how our characters are within a secondary school and promote our movie genre of fantasy/comedy.

Silver linings playbook.

The most prominent aspect within this poster is the split screen pictures. Even though the pictures are black and white the characters stand out. I believe this is due to how close up the photos are. Another slight thing that I love is there different colour eyes, this connotes the idea how the characters has contrasting personality's. the split screen inspired our group within one of our first ideas, as it would be good for our storyline due to the fact of different personality's and social groups. Again the use of doodles has been used, this seems like a similar convention of 'angus thongs and perfect snogging' and our group fell in love with this idea. Even though the title doesn't stand out as much as the pictures, it is yellow which contrasts to the black background and stands out from all other colours. I have notices a pattern within film posters, that the titles varie the fonts and size of different words and make certain words stand out by adding a more bold text or a different colour. Within this poster the words 'silver linings' is bigger than 'playbook.

Our Target Audience

During my groups previous discussions, that have been posted on my blog we have decided to have the target audience from 12 year olds to 25 year old girls. We came to that decision by contemplating our movie genre, our own age and gender, our available location and our idea.
We believe that this target audience will suit our movie genre the most as we carried out a questionnaire to a group of girls with a variety of ages between 12 and 25, to ask them what movies they see most at the cinema. These were our findings:
Our findings have shown to us that most girls between these ages prefer chick flicks, romantic comedies, comedies and fantasy. This is great for us as our film genre is comedy/fantasy. We all agreed on the target audience as it will be easy to produce our trailer to meet the needs of the audience as we are within this age range and know many girls of this age range and gender. Our most available location is our own school so producing a trailer at the school it a perfect and easy idea. A school is also a locations all girls of this age range can relate to or remember. This location also connects with us as a group because its one of the main locations we know. As we are producing a film about different social groups 'bad girls' and 'geeks' this is another relation to our audience as they can connect with a certain character they feel best suits them.

Our final narrative of our film.

We have decided to create a narrative that has somewhat been made into a film before but change the characters and the storyline, and make it our own innovative trailer.
Our group decided to scrap all other ideas for the narrative but stick with our target audience of 12-25, and our genre of film teen comedy/fantasy.
The story starts of with two sworn enemies, e.g. the 'bad girl' and the 'geek.' They hate each other, but one day the both receive an email at the same time and read it out. Little did they know, this was a cursed email that made them wake up in each others bodies. They both need to step in each others shoes to see what each others life is about. The film leads the audience into a funny yet emotional story where enemies become friends by learning their emotional backgrounds.
Our group wont be able to show all of this within a 2 minute trailer but we will hopefully explain the storyline well enough for the audience to see our film in the cinema.

Conventions of comedy trailers

There are certain conventions, we need to consider if we want our trailer to convey the genre of comedy starting with;
  • Using high angle shots to capture the whole environment around the character.
  • editing sounds in after the filming to add or define humour.
  • Using medium shots to capture the characters expressions.
  • Lighting is often bright and shot during the day time.
  • Bight colours are used within the title mostly primary colours.
  • The characters are more exaggerated to add the 'slapstick' feel for the trailer.
Some themes of comedy include;
  • Slapstick
  • Romantic comedy's
  • parody
  • Gross-out
  • screwball comedy
 Within our trailer we will use;
  • Medium shots to capture the characters expression.
  • Exaggerated and stereotypical characters.
  • Use our music to add more humour to parts of our trailer.
  • Bright colours within out text and bold text.
  • Our lighting should be bright as we intend to film during the day, and hopefully pick sunny days to film on.

conventions of indie trailers

The conventions of indie trailers and films usually consist of;
  • Bold, block colours within the title
  • Bubble writing as the titles within the trailer
  • Cartoon like essence towards the trailer such as doodles  within a clip.
  • quirky weird characters, wearing random clothes not following the fashion
  • Indie trailers are usually steaming towards comedy.
  • The music is almost country, but sometimes have artists such as David bowie and madness within them.
Our trailer will have the following;
  • Bold, block colours within the title
  • Bubble writing as the titles
  • The poster will have a cartoon essence as we will add doodles.
  • Our trailer should have some comic clips within
  • The music we hope to create will be country as well feel, this genre of music is cheerful and quirky
  • Within our poster our characters poses will be exaggerated and defined.

Our second idea.

This was the discussion of our second idea. We decided to lean towards a indie/comedy trailer as we aren't a big film production company so our film will look very amateur, but we have decided to embrace this and produce something that does look like a indie company's work. We have also discussed our target audience and how we would like them to be 12-25 as this is around about our age group so we know what girls at this age want from a film, which is a feel good sensation.
The Narrative we have discussed within this video is our second idea but  not our final. We chose not to carry this idea on, due to the storyline being hard to create within a 2 minute trailer, and us having to rely on other students to play parts of each social group within a school. Due to my As project I have learnt not to rely on other students to turn up to rehearsals.

Children of men Film poster essay.

Children of men

The first thing I notices while analysing the film poster of 'Children of Men' was the protagonist of the film called Theo Fardon who is played by the established actor Clive Owen. He is placed on the top right of the poster, with his eyes connecting to the audience. This makes me intrigued by his character as it makes him look mysterious and stern. The fact that Clive Owen is standing behind the only bit of broken glass shows that he is overcoming obstacles and fighting for what he believes in. This poster also gives away that he would be the hero o the film, while the stubble and how he is not well groomed makes him look very rebellious and subverts the hero representations. By having a well-known actor of the film poster it makes the audience want to see the film because if they believe he is a good actor they will automatically assume it's a good film with a good storyline. Surrounding him there is smashed glass, this portrays the films aggression and the fragmentation of the world with the film is trying to portray. The jagged glass near Clive Owen's neck can mean a threat of death with gives the viewer an idea of the movie genre before seeing it which is all of the following, adventure, drama, sci-fi and thriller. this could also lead the audience assuming he will die.
The second thing I notices when looking at the 'children of Men' poster is a large amount of grey and lack of a variety of colours shown. A large section of the poster is a dark grey which is morally ambiguous. However the colours get lighter around Clive Owen's face, this immediately symbolises that he is important toward the story. The red text symbioses blood so we immediately know there will be death in this film.
What I found was really interesting was that the poster has written a very short synopsis:

'The year 2027: the last days of the human race, no child has been born in 18 years he must protect our only hope.'

This is placed in the top left hand corner, and is written in red to contrast with the light grey surrounding it. Many older film posters have short synopsis within them but many contemporary ones down. I believe that key have included one I this film poster as the storyline is so strong and different that it will intrigue the audience as it is weird and wonderful.
The tiles itself symbolises innocence, hope and new life but strangeness as men cant have children. But the colouring of white enhances this more to convey a clearer understanding on how he came up with the title, as the colour white symbolises purity. Above the title there are three main actors names, again this is so the audience can interpret what the think of the film before they have even seen it, by the actors career. All names are the same size font this shows they are all important towards the film. Tulianne Moore is American and Michael Caine is a world famous star, this shows how this film will be shown in other country's not just England.
To the left under the title there is a small picture of an eye that's crying with a foetus inside, this symbolises the key words of the synopsis of the whole film for example birth, pain, survival, chaos and violence. It contrasts to the white title as it's in block red, this displays, how in the film the society has two contrasts, there is a longing for purity but at the same time human kind still partake in violent acts and immoral behaviour. The writing itself is very blunt and sharp. This draws the audience in and intrigues the viewer as it's almost woks as a cliff hanger designed to make people want to see the movie and this works very well.
I struggled to identify the target audience for children of men as it isn't a straight forward genre film. I believe that it's aimed at a fairly broad target audience- both men and women from the ages of about 15-44. This film poster depicts the film well to this audience as it looks exciting, gritty and the colours all make it seem very dark and mysterious.

FILM TRAILER CONVENTIONS

Film Trailers!

  • Creates immediate interest in the film before it's released.
  • Film trailers are one of the most important part of film distribution.
  • Film trailers are one of the main items to promote the film.
  •  There can be several versions of a trailer for one film.
  • There are usually two trailers, one teaser and one that comes out later that gives more information about the film.
  • The teaser trailers come earlier within the distribution process and only shows few exciting details.

These are the film Trailer conventions that our group need to consider.

  • Trailers include key moments from the film with are not places in the sequence of the film, and do not give away any crucial parts, as some get criticised for displaying to much information.
  • The title of the trailer never gets put on the film until the end, following by the realise date.
  • Names of the main stars are usually put at the beginning of the trailers, this is important as the audience may want to see the film because of a certain popular star, and it gives them more information about the cast.

Film trailer analysis.

Saw 1 trailer

  • Voice over of the main character (jigsaw) to enhance his dominance of the film, and the vocals show the audience that the film is a horror and displays the main line of the film.
  • Various fast paced shots of newspaper articles, about this "mysterious" killer to enhance bits of the storyline.
  • There is white text on the black smokey background, to enhance the genre of the film it also fades out to make the trailer freaky.
  • There is another voice over explaining the murder, during there are clips of the film fading to black.
  • There is no music, just sound effects like wind create a creepy effect to the audience.
  • The title appears at the end in a large font but is the same text as the other titles, this then fades into a black.
  • The trailer ends with text saying "This fall" this shows that this is a teaser trailer as it doesn't have a certain date.
Safe haven trailer

The trailer of 'Safe Haven' starts with the green film ratings sign. Rejecting the typical conventions of a trailer the film title shows at the beginning of the trailer, with the text incorporated into an establishing shot. While the title is on there is a sound effect of bird this connects with the title as birds are calm and make you feel safe. After the title shows there is a short clip of the production company which is, Relatively media. After this a variety of fast paced shot showing a man looking for a woman, the starting shot was a low upside down shot of the woman running away, this symbolises her upside down world. Running along side these shots is a sound effect of sirens connoting she Is on the run. After There is a variety of long paces shots with a calming, well known song, not only does the song represent where she is going is calm but as it is a well known popular song it shows this is a high budget movie. Next the titles begin to show up of a water background with dark blue font, some of the text consisted of 'Director, Nicholas sparks.' and 'Bestselling author of the notebook and dear john.' tis shows the audience that this is going to be similar to these films. and makes the movie genre really clear, which is romance. Next the trailer introduces the main characters this is typical for a romantic movie trailer, afterward the clips and dialogue show the protagonists budding love towards each other, which I believe is very cute and I would like to see this movie. Suddenly there are flashbacks, that shows a tragedy that happened in her past, this makes the storyline even more exciting and three dimensional. Then there are titles introducing the storyline, intriguing the audience to want more. Towards the end of the trailer the shots become faster while the song becomes faster as well, this climbs towards the climax of the trailer and exciting clips of the film. The title then appears again, this is strange as many trailer do not have the title twice, but I believe this is a good idea as it inserts the title in the audiences mind. After the trailer tells you when it's coming out in the cinema and then the text fades into multiple shots of the billing board.

warm bodies trailer

This trailer starts again with the green ratings sign a typical trailer convention. It then starts with a voice over of the protagonist speaking about his life, saying he is dead (zombie) the voice over shows the movies genre which is comedy. to accompany this voice over there are shots of him walking around with over zombies etc. There is cheerful music which is contrasting to the thought of horror when it comes to zombies. After this the production logo faces in which is 'summit entertainment.' The trailer shows a lot of funny clips again showing the movie genre and making the audience want to go and see the movie as it looks easy to watch. After this the trailer introduces the antagonists called 'bonies (more zombie people)'  This trailer shows a lot of the storyline as most comic movies do. As the trailer moves towards the end the music gets faster and more aggressive, with fast paces shots showing the climax of the film and trailer. The titles are red black and white, this symbolises death, love, and purity. The font if extremely bold, some of the titles consists of 'this February' 'love makes us human' showing the main storyline of the trailer and when the movie will be out in cinemas. Then the trailer fades into the title which is the same font as the other titles.  The title then fades into a clip that is funny, to again show the audience what the genre is and again the trailer tells us when the film will be released. There is no billing board which defies the usual conventions of movie trailers but social networking sites do appear such as Facebook and twitter this shows that this movie is generated for a younger audience .

Paranormal activity trailer

At the start of this movie trailer there is no green ratings sign which is very strange, and it do not think it is effective. The trailer begins with a tracking shot of people queuing up to see the movie, there is text within this shot saying, 'In September 2009, a screening was held in Hollywood California. ' It then cuts to people getting into their seats at a cinema with text on the shot saying, 'This audience was among the first to experience the movie, Paranormal activity. This is what they saw.' the trailer then cuts to the production company of paramount within a cinema screen. After the trailer keeps swapping back a forth to clips of the film and the reaction of the audience. When there is scary clips the audience reactions are jumpy and shaky etc. This connotes to the audience of the trailer that this movie is really scary. During this text fades in and out with different movie reviews saying how terrifying the movie is. During the climax of this trailer there is broken fuzzy TV effects and fast paces music to amplify the horror. After there is white text that says ' experience it for yourself' this makes the audience want to have the same experience at the people in the cinema in the trailer and will make them want to see the movie. After the title appears which is a typical convection of all trailers. What I found really strange in this trailer is instead of a billing board the had text saying ' opening in certain cities' and listed certain cities within America, this shows me that this may have been a low budget film, but as its now come to England as people enjoyed it and the movie company must of had more profit.

Our group's initial idea.

Summary.

This video is showing our first ever discussion when we got the project. The first thing we spoke about, was the movie genre. I stated that romantic comedies are very hard to conduct as, they show most the film on the trailer and you need a variety of cast. It is also hard to think of a original storyline and to make things funny, as what we may find funny but our target audience may not. After this we had the idea of having a horror trailer about the devil as i state we could have made symbols that represent the devil and you wouldn't have to show much of the storyline. After this the discussion shows Rebecca suggesting, the set of a church she could get hold of for our locations, this would be good as it will have atmosphere.

Target audience

We also discussed what target audience we would like, and decided a horror wouldn't be suitable for children, but we also agreed that there will be no rude contents or swearing within our trailer, as it is not suitable for the exam board.

Narrative

When we spoke about the narrative of our film, we have the idea of exorcism, as it's dramatic and easy to create a storyline, after our discussion that was filmed we decided that actually it would be really hard to film the shots of a exorcism as most films use special effects. There was more discussions about other idea's for example Aimee thought of the idea of a confession box, where the characters confess there demons, this would be an effective idea to convey to the audience as it would create a sense of shock. We decided as a group we should rely on ourselves to be the actors and take it in terns to film due to past projects showing us that relying on people is time consuming.

Music

While discussing music, we believe that we should make our own music via Garage band as it is pushing us to our full potential and giving us new skills to further our knowledge of media. This will also show our creativity and make our trailer our own.
